Karnickelberg Cemetery
Many of those who died in the special camp between 1945 and 1949 were buried on the 'Karnickelberg', a hill immediately adjacent to what is now the Bautzen Correctional Institution. On this hill the city of Bautzen, with federal and state financial assistance and in cooperation with the Bautzen-Komitee e.V. (Bautzen Committee) and Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (People's Federation for the Care of German War Graves), erected a monument to the victims of the Communist dictatorship in the Bautzen prisons. The bodies of some of the victims of the special camp who had been buried at unknown locations were successfully recovered under difficult conditions between 1992 and 1994. The grave site also commemorates the dead whose remains can no longer be located. A memorial chapel immediately adjacent to the cemetery was consecrated In September 2000.
