Memorial Site
The Großschweidnitz Memorial Site is on the site of the Institution’s cemetery. The permanent exhibition is in the former Pathology Building. The exhibition provides information about the crimes committed at Großschweidnitz. In five rooms, it explains the background to the Nazi policy of murdering sick and disabled people, how it was implemented, and what effects it had. Biographies and a memorial book containing the names of all those murdered at Großschweidnitz shed light on their individual fates. The visit to the exhibition can be arranged individually.
Do you only have a short time available and want to get an initial general impression? Then the overview panels give you the opportunity to do that. For those who want to delve deeper into the topic, biographies, exhibits, and interactive installations offer you the chance to investigate further.
Guided tours through the exhibition and in the cemetery can be arranged with prior notice.
The cemetery contains panels with lists of names, and a memorial stone, commemorating the people buried
there. Over 3,500 victims found their final resting place in the cemetery. Owing to the high mortality rate, their burials were conducted without any dignity. The cemetery was neglected and barely maintained. The gravestones were later removed. Since 2019, the cemetery has been designated a war grave site. It is freely accessible.
